Mechanico Chemical Ablation? What To Know

If the thought of being poked with a needle more than a few times is enough to make you never want to step foot in our office, then we have another treatment for you. Although sclerotherapy is a great way to get rid of varicose veins, it’s not for everybody especially patients who are scared of needles and who don’t have large enough veins, to begin with. In addition to offering VenaSeal which doesn’t require a lot of poking around, we also offer a procedure called Mechanico-chemical ablation.

What Is Mechanico-Chemical Ablation?

During this procedure, we will use what is called a Clarivein catheter which we will guide into the veins using ultrasound. Once the catheter is in place, it is then attached to a handpiece which will cause the catheter to spin at a fast rate. This spinning will cause the vein to spasm, and it will also irritate the inner lining of the vein. Then, Dr. Heeringa will slowly inject a sclerosing solution into the same catheter which will help to close off the veins even more.

How Does It Feel?

If you’re worried about the pain, don’t be. This treatment isn’t painful. Many patients say that they feel a bunch of vibrating sensations during this treatment, but it’s not something that hurts.

What Is Recovery Like?

One of the other unique things about this treatment is that it only takes about 30 minutes on average, so if you have to go and get back to work or whatever else, you won’t have to take the entire day off. During your recovery, we encourage patients to wear compression stockings for up to two weeks afterward, but you should be able to resume most of your normal activities right after treatment.
