Vein, Vein, Go Away: Why Winter Is The Best Time To Get Rid Of Your Veins
The temperatures have dropped, the holiday spirit is in the air, and it’s time to pull out your favorite mug and fill it with some hot chocolate. And although it’s the perfect time of year to sing holiday carols and spend time with family, it’s also one of ideal times to consider getting rid of your spider veins.
Here at Northern Michigan Vein Specialists, Dr. Heeringa can help you kiss your nasty spider veins goodbye which will give your legs plenty of time to recover just in time for spring.
To help you get rid of your spider veins, Dr. Heeringa typically likes to perform a treatment called sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy works by injecting a tiny needle directly into the veins to insert a sclerosing solution (usually salt water). Once the solution is injected, it irritates the lining of the vein which causes it to swell and the blood itself to clot— in turn, causing the veins to close off and the body to naturally absorb it. Although the thought of having a needle injected into your veins may sound painful, most patients equate the sensation to a mosquito bite— which means that as far as pain goes, you have nothing to worry about.
One of the reasons why we encourage patients to get sclerotherapy done in the winter is because it takes a bit of time for your body to absorb your veins. Additionally, most patients require about two to four treatments to get full results. By getting this procedure done early on, you can have the smooth, vein-free skin you’ve wanted just in time for the warmer weather.
