How Long Will My Procedure Take?

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy & Varithena

The procedure may take anywhere between 20 minutes to 30 minutes.  Dr. Heeringa uses a medical injectable irritant that causes inflammation of the vein followed by fibrosis (natural healing scar) thus obliterating the vein wall.

After the procedure, the medical assistant will apply Dermaka cream, followed by the placement of your compression hose. The Medical Assistant will also place an application of a coban dressing around the treated areas. We recommend that this coban dressing be left on for a minimum of 30 minutes. You will stay in recovery for 5-10 minutes.  During that time, the Medical Assistant will go over your post op instructions.

Total Time: 30 – 45 minutes

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Before Dr. Heeringa comes into the room, 2 medical assistants will begin the pre-procedure set-up, which involves the prepping of your leg with an antibacterial liquid called betadine, followed by the placement of the sterile towels and drapes. These drapes will cover you from the chest down. Once this is completed, Dr. Heeringa will come into the room and the procedure will start. This preparation will take approximately 10 minutes and the actual procedure takes 20 minutes.

After the procedure, the medical assistant will clean your leg followed by the placement of your compression stockings. A coban dressing will be applied to the puncture site where the catheter was inserted through. We recommend that this coban dressing be left on for a minimum of 30 minutes. You will stay in recovery for 10 minutes.  During that time, the Medical Assistant will go over your post op instructions.

Total Time: 45 minutes – 1 hour

Phlebectomy (Removal Of Varicose Veins)

Before the procedure, Dr. Heeringa will come into the room and with you standing, will use a vein light to visualize your varicose veins that will be removed. He will then use a marker to outline the veins. After the marking of your veins, 2 medical assistants will begin the pre-procedure set-up, which involves the prepping of your leg with an antibacterial liquid called betadine, followed by the placement of the sterile towels and drapes. These drapes will cover you from the chest down. Once this is completed, Dr. Heeringa will come into the room and the procedure will start. This preparation will take approximately 10 minutes.

After the procedure, the medical assistant will place a 3-layer dressing on the treated leg.  The patient will stay in recovery for 10 minutes.  During that time, the medical assistant will go over your post op instructions.

Total Time: 1 ½ – 2 hours
