Dr. Heeringa is one of the country’s premier vein surgeons, and has spent years expanding the treatment of venous disorders to ensure patients find good health. He started Northern Michigan Vein Specialists when he realized that more and more patients were seeking dedicated treatment for their veins, and that this makes a substantial impact on quality of life.
Dr. Heeringa’s decades of expertise and compassionate nature, as well as his focus on advancing research and solutions to continually advance venous disorder treatment has put him and NMVS at the forefront of vein care in North America, moving beyond traditional medical education to focus on the venous system outside of DVT and pulmonary embolism, often correcting misdiagnoses for venous disorders, an issue ten times more common than arterial disorders.
Dr. Brian Heeringa’s Experience
As an undergraduate, Dr. Heeringa earned his degree in biology at Calvin College, where he participated in varsity swimming and also completed a biochemistry minor. He graduated as valedictorian of his class from the Ross University School of Medicine in 1999, going on to complete his General Surgery Residency at the MSU/Synergy Medical Education Alliance Campus in Saginaw, Michigan in 2005. While completing his residency, Dr. Heeringa received several awards for his teaching as well as serving as Chief Resident in his final year, previously having won Outstanding Junior Resident. Upon completing his residency, Dr. Heeringa began practicing general surgery in Cadillac, where he was the first physician in the area to offer minimally invasive venous care service.
In 2008, Dr. Heeringa began noticing an increasing percentage of his practice being dedicated to helping patients find relief and resolutions to venous disorders. In 2016, eight years later, he decided to commit 100% of his care to treating venous and lymphatic disorders that are often overlooked in traditional medical education. He started Northern Michigan Vein Specialists, opening offices in Traverse City and Cadillac, to help patients across Michigan and beyond find solutions that prioritize their wellbeing while offering innovative surgical solutions that are effective, comfortable, and safe.

When he’s not offering patients the latest and greatest in venous and lymphatic care, you can find Dr. Heeringa spending time with his two sons at his Traverse City residence. Dr. Heeringa speaks both English and Spanish and is often brushing up on his bilingual care. In his free time, you’ll find him running, cycling, and enjoying his classic cars hobby!
