How Is Lipedema Treated?

Lipedema is a condition that occurs when fat is stored irregularly in the body. Lipedema is a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition. In its advanced stages, the fat deposits can block lymph drainage and cause lymphedema – a buildup of fluid that can lead to infection, poor healing of wounds, and hardened legs.

What Are The Symptoms Of Lipedema?

The primary symptom of lipedema is the poor distribution of fat, in which the lower half of the person’s body is twice or more as large as the top half of the person’s body. It typically begins with fat deposits around the ankles and continues to exacerbate to the point where, if not treated, it can become life-threatening.

How Is Lipedema Treated?

There are a variety of treatments for lipedema, including manual lymph drainage and wearing compression stockings. Liposuction may also be necessary to remove the fat blockage. Exercise is also important to prevent fluid buildup. Without treatment, be wary of the symptoms of lymphedema: swelling of part or all of your leg or arm, including the digits, a feeling of heaviness or tightness, restricted range of motion, aching or discomfort, recurring infections, and hardening and thickening of the skin (fibrosis).

What Causes Lipedema?

Lipedema is both an excess buildup of fat cells in a particular area, and the expansion of those fat cells. Why this happens is unknown. But because this is basically a condition that affects women, it is assumed that hormones play a role. It is a condition that primarily affects women and may be triggered by hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Genetics may also play a factor, as many members of the same family often suffer from the condition.
